Kinja'd!!!

The first car. It is something every gearhead looks forward to. It is also something that everyone has an opinion on for which makes the perfect one. Some believe that buying the cheapest thing that still moves is best because the teen will destroy it anyway. Others choose brand new since they are safer and more reliable. I wanted a former but ended up with a latter: a 2013 Honda Civic LX sedan with an auto.

This wasn't my choice. I wanted this 1991 Volvo 240 down the street with 150,000+ miles on it (I think the odometer was broken) for only $1500. My grandma, the one who I'd be sharing my car with, told me it was too slow. So, she ended up deciding that leasing was our best bet. I would pay half of the lease, insurance, and anything else it needed.

(Full disclaimer: Honda wanted me to get a 2013 Civic so badly, they first built a new Honda dealership about 5 miles from my house. They then gave me a deal I couldn't refuse. After all taxes, registration, and dealer fees, she would be mine for $199 a month for 36 months. To make sure I'd get it, the dealer made sure to have the exact model I wanted: an LX in Polished Metal Metallic with the light interior.)

All in all it is a very good car. She does everything I want and more. You could stop here with the review. I won't. Here is the full thing.

Exterior: 7/10

Kinja'd!!!

The 2012 Civic was a bust. Reviewers were not impressed. Honda decided to drastically update it, giving us the 2013. The exterior is much more aggressive. The front bumper is sporty and has cool flairs. The 15" wheels; although quite small, have an interesting design; one that I personally am not a huge fan of. The best part however is the rear. The new taillights make the car look much more classy and expensive. They fill up the back but are not too busy.

All in all, the exterior is one of the more classy looking ones in its class (I'm looking at you Elantra and Corolla with your curvy and ugly bodies). The paint color looks really nice and shines in the sun.

Interior: 6/10

Kinja'd!!!

The interior is a mix of both good and bad qualities. It is huge inside. The backseat seems to have just as much if not more rear legroom than in my dad's 2012 Volvo S60. The finish is really nice. There is not a lot of cheap hard plastic anymore. The passenger side of the dashboard is covered in this nice pleather substance. It is also nice and bright. Everything fits together nicely without any major gaps.

Everything is within easy reach, all of the controls turned towards the driver. In the driver's seat, you get a feeling of being a pilot in a cockpit; everything wraps around you nicely.

However, there are still a few flaws. On the left side of the steering wheel for instance, there is a big green button. This enables the ECON mode. There is no need for such a big button. It could've just as easily been buried under some settings in the screen.

Also, the dashboard, although bright and full of information, is a bit busy. There are these green and blue LED lights that judge your driving. There is an instant fuel gauge which is never standing still. The digital speedometer is in the middle of these. It is a nice touch because you don't ever need to guess your exact speed. However, I can see it being an issue during a driving license test since they can always monitor your speed exactly (not that I speed or anything.) Below this, where most cars have all their gauges, is a giant tachometer. To me, it is pointless because I have an automatic. It is way bigger than it should be. I never have to watch my RPMs so it is really useless.

The seats are also kind of narrow and lack a lot of support. I couldn't see spending multiple hours in these seats without stopping. The passenger seat also has no height adjustment, so it seems too high up there.

The big windows do allow for a lot of visibility though, which is always helpful. And the windows in front of the mirrors are also helpful, despite what some say. I end up using them a lot, and it sucks when you start driving a car without them.

Acceleration: 5/10

Kinja'd!!!

Let's be honest here. It is a Honda Civic. This thing is a sub $20,000 small car. The inline-4 makes 140 horsepower. It isn't a rocket ship off the line. It is also a VTEC. So, you must wait until around 4,000 RPM before power is made. However, once it does, it does move. It's like driving a car with horrible turbo lag. What this means is that you will not win any races against a Yaris off the line. Or an Aveo. Or anything really. But, it does get up to speed and hold it. So, it deserves some points there.

Braking: 5/10

Being an LX, the brakes are not perfect. It still has drum brakes in the rear, and they are not the best. The pedal is soft. The brakes take a bit of time to stop the car when nicely, smoothly braking. If you need to do an emergency stop though, they do work well when you slam on them.

Ride: 7/10

Kinja'd!!!

For a small, cheap car, the ride is actually really nice. The sound deadening is very nice and not a lot of noise enters the cabin. You do not feel a lot of bumps either. The suspension absorbs bumps a lot more than one would expect. I've driven a Ford Focus, Toyota Yaris, and Nissan Sentra. Honestly, this has the best ride out of all of them.

Handling: 6/10

This care is fun to drive. Sure, it is FWD. Sure it is underpowered. But the handling is really nice. It is tight and there is not a lot of play in the wheel. You can quickly turn the wheel and it responds instantly. The wheel has a nice feel too; although it is a little small.

Gearbox: 5/10

It's an automatic. 5 speed to be exact. To many of you, it should have a zero here. But it isn't an awful gearbox. The gear changes are really smooth and it shifts at a really good time. It never has moments where it is seeking a gear and always seems to be in the perfect gear; not too low or high.

Audio: 4/10

Kinja'd!!!

This is a four cylinder. It moans a bit when you step on it. It isn't a great noise; but it isn't awful either. You kind of get hooked on hearing it; I know I am. However, being underpowered, going uphill requires you to push the gas a bit harder. This makes the engine have too high of an RPM and it moans loudly. This sound is just sad. It proves how weak it is.

Again, it's an LX. The audio is very weak. It only has four speakers. The sound is clear; but not very loud or powerful. The bass is quite low too. But, it does have a system. And it is better than the base Insight's one speaker system.

Toys: 8/10

Kinja'd!!!

For $18,965, you get a lot of goodies. This includes Bluetooth, Pandora, the ability to read text messages, an automatic transmission, and a backup camera. It also has power windows, cruise control, TPMS system, a color LCD screen, power mirrors, ABS, traction control, daytime running lights, a ton of airbags, and more things that I am forgetting here. It really is a good value and is much more loaded than many similar cars.

For the lease of $199 per month you really cannot beat it. It has a warranty for the life of my lease, gap insurance, $1000 wear and tear, and more goodies too. It is a great value for a first car.

Value: 9/10

Kinja'd!!!

The vase price for a Civic LX coupe with a manual is $17,965. My LX sedan with an automatic is $19,190. A fully loaded EX-L sedan with navigation will run you $24,240. For everything that is included (as stated above) as well as Honda reliability, it is a great value. The newer Civics are becoming more classy; less econo-box and more small family sedan. Whereas competitors are going with crazy hip ads (Toyota Corolla) or strange designs full of creases (Hyundai Elantra) the Civic remains a simple classy way to get around with a dash of fun thrown in. It does have even more competition though from the likes of the Mazda 3, Subaru Impreza, Ford Focus, Nissan Versa, Chevy Cruze, Dodge Dart, Kia Forte and VW Jetta, all of which have their own advantages and disadvantages. I do believe though that for the lease I have, the reliability of Honda, and other key factors, the Civic is easily in the top of its class.

If however, you have a choice, spring for a coupe with a manual. Heck, even a coupe with an automatic is better. I wasn't allowed to have either.

Total Score: 62/100

I like the Mazda better (higher fuel economy and better-looking), but my wife had a 2005 civic that was faultless. It was just SO BORING. Mind-numbing in fact; Perfect for people that find driving to be a chore and take pride in being able to update facebook in traffic. Don't be one of those people.

I'm not going to lie... I wanted a Mazda so badly... Sadly 1) my grandma has a thing against Mazda's and refuses to drive one (I share the civic with her)) and 2) since the new ones just came out, the lease was around $259 with $3500 down which was more than we wanted to spend...

A car enthusiast shouldn't buy that, especially as a first car. Period.

Actually I'll add one more word: Mazda.

Massive understeer and gratuitous body-roll can be fun in a comical sort of way. But if you're interested in going slow but having fun an old civic is a better bet. On the up-side you got a decent deal so you can maybe afford to buy on old POS and polish it up! Your path to a Jalop is clear.

This is exactly how I feel about my Civic (08 LX mt). It's an awesome car, just boring and basic. I feel guilty looking at new cars, but I've been bored for 6 years now. Time for a change!

Being a proper car enthusiast has very little to do with the car you drive. Maybe I should phrase that as 'being a car enthusiast of the Opposite Lock community has very little to do with the car you drive'

No judgement here.

Kinja'd!!!1

A jalop doesn't necessarily have to have a miata, rwd diesel wagon or a true sports car, but should know about cars enough to know what to buy in each segment. The current base civic is clearly not, especially for someone that talks about and wants something engaging to drive. Actually he should know the first car shouldn't be new, to begin with.

What constitutes being a car enthusiast? It certainly isn't reading news about million cars vehicles, but knowing some car mechanics and owning a car for instance.

Kinja'd!!!5

There's no absolutes. A first car doesn't have to be used just because you don't think it should.

Do I agree with the Civic choice? Not really, but he had reasons for it. So long as he takes care of it and enjoys driving it, you really have nothing to judge him for.

My gf has the same car. She's not a car person. She loves it.

Even though a bunch of people here are saying they'd take the Mazda 3 over it, that might apply for the new one, but the previous, derpy-faced one, no way.

I had a '13 3i Skyactiv auto as a service loaner last year and the car was infuriating. It was always going for way too high of a gear and you had to practically floor it to get any kind of acceleration. The back seat was too small, the ride was too bumpy, and it was noisy.

The Civic's handling is in the same general ballpark, is a much smoother ride, way bigger back seat, and even though its 5-speed auto is a little outdated (and the '14 has switched to a CVT) it at least will accelerate without having to floor the damn thing and kick down 3 gears.

In general terms -not this case- I still find rather weird that people go to talk about something all their lives and haven't experienced or own a bit about it.

The phrase "put your mouth where your money is" does apply, at least on the long run (not necessarily the first cars).

This is a practical hobby. Talking about it is useless and a whole different thing than experiencing it in any aspect, whether driving, racing, ownership, repairing, meetings, etc. etc.

At least once in life anyone that has the time to talk about cars all day has enough money to buy a first or second gen miata.

Lets put it this way: why would anyone go to talk about bikes for 5 years if they don't have a license?

People can like cars and not have a license. I know there have been a few jalops over the years that haven't had their license yet.

I can't have a Miata right now. I plan on buying one within the next 12 months, but for now I can only talk about them having driven 2 of them for less than 30 minutes.

Are you saying we can't talk about Ferrari's and Lamborghini's unless we can afford them?

Once 'enthusiasts' start setting rules to claiming enthusiasm, it becomes pointless to be an enthusiast. Elitism isn't a nice thing. Maybe it works in other communities, VW forums probably get along just fine excluding anyone who doesn't own a VW. Here at Oppo we are open to enthusiasts of every flavor, even if they drive a 2013 grey Civic with an automatic that they share with their grandmother.

Enjoy your new car. Make the most of it's good attributes and put whatever negatives you find in it to the back of your mind. Be happy that your first ride is going to be dependable and fun to drive at the same time. And kudos for such a good post.

Kinja'd!!! avens > Jayhawk Jake
01/08/2014 at 13:47

What I'm saying is being an enthusiast about something is not only talking about news (1), that this is a practical hobby (2) and that knowledge is not knowing about the latest Ferrari but knowing what to purchase for yourself for instance (3).

Car forums are filled with people that don't even own a car and talk and recommend stuff with supreme confidence. I think we can increase that level, at least better than going for new base civics with all the history they have in the last years and how much better that money could be spent :P

And BTW this is a sort of expensive hobby with entry barriers on each aspect of it. It is what it is and that's not elitism; like saying somebody is a track day enthusiast....but hasn't driven in track because it's expensive. Too bad but he isn't an enthusiast in that aspect.

Kinja'd!!! Jayhawk Jake > avens
01/08/2014 at 14:14

Kinja'd!!!3

I agree to a point, I just don't think such classifications belong here . We try to not exclude anyone for any reason, even if we disagree with their car choice. So he ended up with a civic, does that make him not an enthusiast? No. Now if he started talking about how much better the Ferrari 458 is to drive than a McLaren MP4-12C even though he's never so much as touched either one, then I would agree with commenting on his 'status'

All I'm trying to say is don't come on here calling people non-enthusiasts based on what they drive. It isn't appreciated within this community, even if many would agree with you.

Thanks for standing up for me! And you are completly right... first, I've been on here for around a year; before I even had a permit; heck I don't even have a license yet (one month away)... as I stated in the 2nd paragraph, i wanted that old Volvo.... the Civic was a compromise.. you have the oppo message completly right!

01/08/2014 at 14:57

Kinja'd!!!1

As I stated in the actual article (if you did bother to read it instead of reading the title and scrolling down to post a comment) it wasn't my first choice. I wanted that Volvo 240. I wanted a Mazda or a Subie even a Veloster... I had to still please my grandma who was putting up half the money.. she wouldn't drive a stick; she wouldn't buy American; she wouldn't let me get a coupe; she wouldn't let the payments be more than $200 a month.. it was so limited this was the best...

For the Miata; I couldn't get one for many reasons: grandma doesn't want a small car; doesn't want a convertible; they are too small for her (she hates small cars) and I am pretty much too big for one in the first place.. it isn't practical in any way shape or form... I need a reliable DD that will get me to school and work safely and maybe haul a friend or two along the way..

I don't even have my license yet; I have a permit... but I have loved cars since I was around 3 years old and have known a lot about them since I was about 10 years old

And have you seen what others drive on here? We have older Chevy Malibus, Saturns, Pontiacs; not everyone can afford that awesome sports car... A true enthusiast loves what they drive and how they drive it; I don't need to be rich to appreciate cars...

Exactly.. I may have been able to afford last gen's 3; but it is no where near as good as the new one.. why would I want last years model... when I got this, it was the best Civic... honestly the CVT in the Civic scares me a bit since they always seem a lot slower..

For what it is, the Civic is a good car and one of the best deals in its class

I wrote him back a long response too... like I said in the article I didn't want a Civic.. I don't want to drive a Civic forever... I'm a true car guy; I plan on getting multiple cars in a few years.. This was the best car I could get and a true enthusiast can appreciate whatever he has... in fact I feel that driving this thing is making me a better enthusiast because it is teaching me even more responsibilty... I am keeping it spotless... I want to turn it in 33 months later and have the dealer be amazed by its condition... I don't allow food in it at all; only water is allowed to be drunk; I wash it about once a month; have trash bags inside to keep it in good shape and drive very carefully to avoid accidents and dings.. Not everyone can have a Miata.. I don't really fit in a Miata; it has no back seat; it has a small trunk... they are a great car. just not a perfect daily driver or only car to have

Look, as others have almost rudely pointed out, this isn't really an "enthusiast" or "jalop" car. BUT, it's a great first car. It means that you could go get a second, less reliable car some day and not have to constantly worry about your commute. I think. I've never had a reliable car. Appreciate the review, sounds like a good solid car that will hopefully be Honda reliable for you for years.

FYI the VTEC system in the non-Si trim civics is not the kind that you describe where it makes more power above ~4k RPM. It is actually designed to be activated at much lower RPMs (about 1000-3500) in order to help with the (barely existent) low end torque and improve fuel economy.

There's some graphs floating around out there that shows it I believe

I really like airplanes, especially fighter jets. I can assure you, I have never piloted an F-15, nor can I afford to buy one. That doesn't make me any less of an enthusiast.

They're a very 'Merica plane, I suppose. 8 machine guns, supposed conceptual ancestor to the A-10, etc. etc.

Also round and tubby like a fat Corgi.

To quote Kazzer: "It's not what you drive it's how you drive what you got".

My first car was a 1992 Ford Tempo 3sp Automatic. It's like this civic, but without the tech, or even zoom of 140 hp. That thing had 92 hp. If you told anybody in my family, I wasn't an enthusiast, they would laugh you out of the house.

What does being an enthusiast mean? It means being enthusiastic about something. Is this kid enthusiastic about cars? Oh you bet he is.

I shared this to OPPO and started following you for this comment, and the ones above.

And I'm a Mizzou fan. If that's not a sign of how great our community of Jalops and Opponauts is, I'm not sure what could be...

Who were you rooting for in the Cotton Bowl?

Nice review. Brutally honest, I like it. My father, whose a car guy, still to this day believes that this car is a perfect first car. My sister's about your age and this is what she'll probably get.

Yes, he should buy a Mazda that will rot to the door handles in 4 years and be worth less than a Happy Meal at trade time. Brilliant.

Nice first car... don't listen to anyone who's bagging on it. Drive it, enjoy it. Small, slow and nimble is a good combo in a first car.

You've always got basketball - ha!

I hope KU and Mizzou can patch relations so there can at least be at least a border showdown game each season.

I don't think KU and Mizzou will ever play again outside of the NCAA tournament.

Well, that'd be a shame.

We always play Illinois; it just seems that there's too much money to be made on a rivalry game to not make it happen.

Kinja'd!!! Jayhawk Jake > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, but why would we give you the money? You left the conference on your own accord. KU has enough schools willing to play us non conference that playing Missouri is pretty pointless.

Sensing some hostility...

Because you like money, too, and no other KU game will draw as many fans as KU-MU.

It's not hostility, I just speak the truth. There seems to be quite a bit of animosity on the part of the KU program management that MU left the Big 12, but still wants to play KU.

I think you underestimate our fanbase to think no other game will draw as many fans. We sell out every single game in Allen Fieldhouse, whether it's against Alcorn State or Georgetown.

When we can draw teams like Duke or Kentucky in non conference play, why would we bother playing Missouri?

I understand the animosity, and maybe it will take a change in AD for a rivalry game to come back. I don't underestimate your fans; I just feel like a KU-MU matchup could sell out even bigger venues (Arrowhead for football, a big KC arena for basketball).

FWIW, with memories of the Big 8 days, I was sad to see the Big XII change so much in the past few years, and I'll miss having more opportunities to see Mizzou play (I live in OK now). That said, so far the move to the SEC seems positive - we'll see how it plays out long term.

Just sad to lose such a historic rivalry (since 1891!):

This wasn't my choice. I wanted this 1991 Volvo 240 down the street with 150,000+ miles on it (I think the odometer was broken) for only $1500. My grandma, the one who I'd be sharing my car with, told me it was too slow.

Awww the 1991 Volvo 240. How badly I dream at night to buy one and have just a bit of fun... :P

Overall this review was good, but there were a few complaints that I found odd.

First, the big green Econ is kind of standard in this class. Its competitors may not have it in green, but from what I can remember they all have a large Econ button to the left of the steering wheel. Don't bitch about small things like this, unless you're set on being a real automotive journalist, because with them it's mandatory to bitch about tiny little things.

Your dashboard complaints: the instant fuel gauge isn't really supposed to stay constant, it's instant, and this ever changing. If you want a gauge to stay roughly the same put it on average.

The giant tach: just because you bought an automatic does not mean people with the manual won't need it, plus, it does still come in handy in even in automatic cars because you should be paying attention at what speed the engine is turning; it allows you to tell whether the transmission has shifted or not. It also comes in handy if the auto has a manual mode.

First off, boy, you have balls confessing to this here.

Respect!

Second, it is kinda unfortunate that you had to share the car with your grandma, otherwise it could have at least been a manual. I think your arguments were completely valid, but I wouldn't necessarily do as you did. But anyway, you can still drift it in the snow ^^

Cheers!

Thanks! If I just had around $250 a month lease and granma wasn't involved; I would've considered the 500 Abarth Cabrio, Civic SI, Impreza WRX, Veloster Turbo, even a Beetle Turbo because they are much cooler... If I had the garage space, I'd have two cars by now...

The second she goes to pop the trunk (or open hatch (I prefer the latter)) she'd laugh at the spoiler.. go inside and get in the bucket seats and she'd complain about the lack of adjustments... turn the key and scoff the noise.. I'd love it

She drives luxury cars; Lexuses, a MB S500, now a Hyundai Genesis... nothing stupid or loud
